TS Galaxy and SuperSport United registered important wins in the DStv Premiership on Saturday, while KZN derby spoils went to AmaZulu.
The day began with AmaZulu edging local rivals Maritzburg United 1-0 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium to continue Brandon Truter’s winning start as head coach.
Nicholas Lukhubeni’s 21st-minute own-goal clinched the derby spoils for Usuthu, who closed within a point of Stellenbosch directly above them in seventh place.
Elsewhere, TS Galaxy clawed their way out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 victory over Sekhukhune United at the Makhulong Stadium.
Orebotse Mongae’s eighth-minute goal settled the contest in Tembisa as the Rockets leapfrogged Swallows into 14th position to go three points clear of the bottom two, with Babina Noko lurking in 10th spot following back-to-back defeats.
Meanwhile, Royal AM remain in the driving seat for CAF Champions League football after they drew 1-1 against Cape Town City at the Cape Town Stadium.
Mxolisi Macuphu opened the scoring two minutes before half-time, but an own-goal from Zukile Mkhize on 67 minutes earned the Citizens a point, which took them above Kaizer Chiefs into third place, four behind Thwihli Thwahla.
In the late kick-off, SuperSport United gave the perfect response to the sacking of Kaitano Tembo this week by beating Chiefs 1-0 at the FNB Stadium.
Thamsanqa Gabuza’s 68th-minute winner dented Amakhosi’s hopes of a top-two finish as they trail Royal AM by five points in fourth spot, while Matsatsantsa closed right up on the tails of AmaZulu in eighth place on 34 points after recording their first win in five league games.
