Kaizer Chiefs began their post Stuart Baxter era with a 1-0 defeat in one of four DStv Premiership matches played across South Africa on Saturday 23 April.
The Amakhosi and the English coach parted ways earlier in the week after what has been a stuttering campaign, but there was no ‘new manager bounce’ for the Soweto giants under caretakers Arthur Zwane and Dillon Sheppard, as they slumped 1-0 away to Stellenbosch FC at the Danie Craven Stadium in an early-evening clash which was decided by a first-half goal from Deano Van Rooyen.
The result further entrenches Stellenbosch in the top half of the table, while Chiefs suffered a major blow in their hopes of finishing second – and leaders Mamelodi Sundowns are even closer to clinching the league title.
The afternoon matches both ended in draws: Golden Arrows and Sekhukhune United played out a goalless stalemate at the Princess Magogo Stadium to leave both clubs still comfortable in mid-table, while a key relegation clash at the Mbombela Stadium between TS Galaxy and Maritzburg United ended 1-1.
The Rockets claimed the lead via an Augustine Kwem penalty, but the Team of Choice struck back late on through Friday Samu to claim a share of the spoils. Maritzburg and Galaxy are four and three points clear of the relegation playoff berth respectively.
The late game at the Peter Mokaba Stadium ended in a 0-0 draw between Marumo Gallants (who creep ever closer to mathematically securing survival) and SuperSport United (who moved up one place to seventh).
The DStv Premiership continues on Sunday 24 April with Swallows FC at home to Baroka FC in a relegation six-pointer, as well as a derby clash between Royal AM and AmaZulu at the Chatsworth Stadium.
