Legendary Nigerian forward Victor Ikpeba feels that Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Premier League giants Manchester United was a mistake.

The Portugal captain and forward rejoined the Red Devils from Italian giants Juventus FC in August 2021 and he is the club’s top scorer across all competitions with 22 goals this season.

However, United have struggled this term having been eliminated from FA Cup, UEFA Champions League and English League Cup (Carabao), and they are currently struggling in the Premier League.

Ikpeba, who played for German giants Borussia Dortmund and former French champions AS Monaco, believes Ronaldo, 37, should leave the Red Devils at the end of the current season.

“I think he [Ronaldo] should be leaving the club. Ronaldo coming back to Manchester United was a mistake,” Ikepa said on Daily Post Nigeria.

“It’s not a question of him scoring goals, so many things happen when a star player returns to his original club.

“In many ways, Ronaldo has been a distraction. He’s a global star in football, he shouldn’t have come back at that age, he should have gone to Manchester City,” he added.

“Egocentric players, jealousy comes to play in the dressing room. The atmosphere has been nasty right from the beginning.”

Ronaldo’s current deal with United will expire at the end of June 2023, but the club has an option to extend for a further year.
