Sadio Mane solidified his status as one of Africa’s finest footballers in the game today, after he overtook a landmark UEFA Champions League goal record previously set by Chelsea legend, Didier Drogba.

Liverpool faced a spirited Villareal outfit in a second-leg UEFA Champions League semi-final tie on Tuesday night, as the six-time winners of the tournament came out on tops.

The Reds head into the second-leg with a 2-0 aggregate lead, however, the Yellow Submarine fans at El Madrigal were treated to a spectacle in the first half. A goal from Boulaye Dia in the 3rd minute set the tone during the early exchanges of the match, as they halved the goal deficit.

Liverpool were provided with a number of anxious moments during the first 45, as Villarreal showcased a completely different side to themselves compared to their first leg performance at Anfield.

In a moment that drew the tie level on aggregate, former Arsenal midfielder Francis Coqeulin scored a glancing header in the 41st minute that left goalkeeper Alisson Becker rooted to the spot.

However, Liverpool returned after the break and fired at all cylinders with Jurgen Klopp’s half-time team talk clearly doing the trick. In a space of 12 minutes, Fabinho, Luis Diaz and Mane got their names on the scoresheet as the English giants put the game out of reach for Villareal.

As one of the star men of the night, Mane found himself breaking a unique record in the process as he became the highest scoring African in the UEFA Champions League knockout stage (15).

Mane’s goal saw him overtake Chelsea great, Drogba (14) with Mohamed Salah just behind the Ivorian with 11 goals to his name.

The Senegal star took his overall goal tally to 21 in 46 appearances for the season, while recording three assists along the way.
