Cape Town City were the only winners from five DStv Premiership matches played across South Africa on Saturday 7 May.
The Citizens defeated TS Galaxy 2-0 at the Cape Town Stadium – thanks to goals from Darwin Gonzalez and Mduduzi Mdantsane – to leapfrog Royal AM (who have now have a game in hand) into second place on the log and boost their hopes of qualifying for next season’s CAF Champions League.
The Rockets, meanwhile, remain in 14th place on the log, two points above the relegation playoff zone (15th) currently occupied by Swallows FC, while bottom-of-the-log Baroka FC are two points further back.
The afternoon games were hugely contrasting in entertainment value: Marumo Gallants and Golden Arrows produced a snooze-fest for their 0-0 stalemate in Polokwane, while relegation-threatened clubs Chippa United and Baroka FC produced a cracking 2-2 draw.
The Chilli Boys broke the deadlock through Riaan Hanamub midway through the second half, but soon found themselves trailing to bottom-of-the-log Bakgaga ba Mphahlele, who struck through Dan Ndlovu and Decide Chauke to put themselves on course for a first away win of the season.
However, Chippa hit back in injury time through Thokozani Sekotlong to salvage a share of the spoils and keep themselves clear of the red zone.
The early-evening games kept the draw theme running, as AmaZulu were held 0-0 at home by Sekhukhune United, while Maritzburg United picked up a valuable point on the road in their 1-1 draw with Stellenbosch FC at Danie Craven Stadium.
The Team of Choice claimed the lead just after the hour mark via an Alfred Ndengane penalty, but Stellies made it 1-1 via Judas Moseamedi.
The DStv Premiership’s weekend action will be wrapped up on Sunday 8 May with a blockbuster clash between Kaizer Chiefs and champions Mamelodi Sundowns at FNB Stadium.
