Cameroonian star Joel Matip has proved to be the lucky charm for Liverpool FC after scoring the club’s winning goal on Tuesday.
The towering central defender was the Reds’ hero as scored the winner to inspire the team to a 2-1 win over Southampton FC in a Premier League match.
Liverpool were without key players such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk, but they managed to secure a narrow win at St Mary’s Stadium.
The Merseyside giants have always won their English elite division matches when the 30-year-old Matip scores according to a leading British analytics company, Opta Sports.
“Joel Matip has ended on the winning side in all eight Premier League matches when he’s scored,” Opta wrote.
“While he’s only lost 10 of his 125 Premier League appearances (8%), the lowest ratio of any of the 1,081 players to appear at least 100 times in the competition’s history. Dominant.”
Matip, who announced his international retirement in 2015, has enjoyed his best season at Liverpool having also overcome his injury woes.
The former Schalker 04 star was named Premier League Player of the Month for February 2022 on March 14.
He has featured in 42 matches across all competitions and netted three goals this term.
