Nigeria head coach Jose Peseiro believes the players are starting to incorporate his ideas after claiming a record 10-0 win over Sao Tome and Principe on Monday.

Peseiro took over the reins last month as the successor to Augustine Eguavoen, who was sacked in the wake of the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.

The Portuguese tactician began his reign with back-to-back friendly defeats to Mexico and Ecuador before guiding his team to a 2-1 victory over Sierra Leone in their opening 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Thursday.

The West Africans had to come from behind in that match after the Leone Stars took a surprise early lead in Abuja, but there would be no scares in Agadir four days later as they put the Falcons and True Parrots to the sword to record their biggest-ever victory.

The result saw the Nigerians move to the top of Group A on six points and Peseiro claimed the historic win was more important than the scoreline.

“About the 10-0 win? Yes, it’s good. It is better for us [to get] three points, which is more important to us,” he told ESPN.

“Of course, I want to improve our organisation on the field because we didn’t train too much with them. We want to introduce our ideas – this match was good because they tried to follow our organisation, our style, our idea.

“I am also happy because the guys who entered during the match did as well as those players who started.”
