Following Ehab Galal’s sacking as the Egypt head coach, it has now been revealed who the ‘leading candidate’ is to take over as the Pharaoh’s new mentor.

After an underwhelming start to their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, particularly after a shock defeat to Ethiopia last week, Galal was shown toward the exit doors.

Now though, a report from the Egyptian Football Association has confirmed who the leading candidate for the post is, with ex-coach Carlos Queiroz still highly respected by the federation.

Galal replaced Queiroz in April this year but subsequently parted ways with the national side after a defeat to Senegal in the 2022 FIFA World Cup play-offs.

“I respect Carlos Queiroz very much and the work he did with the Egyptian national team,” Hazem Emam said at the EFA’s press conference, as per KingFut.

“I know fans have criticised him for his defensive approach but the way they wanted him to play was difficult to achieve on the pitch.

“I haven’t spoken to Queiroz since he left the national team, but he is certainly one of the leading candidates to coach Egypt going forward.

“I will not reveal the names of the other candidates because we are still in talks. There is a large number of managers who are interested in this opportunity.”
