Ashanti Gold ace Yaw Annor has pipped Franck Mbella of Asante Kotoko to the Ghana Premier League Golden Boot after equalling Ishmael Addo’s record of 22 goals in a season.

Annor trailed Mbella by one goal going into the final round of fixtures, but he managed to come out on top in the scoring charts thanks to a brace against Bibiani Gold Stars.

The 24-year-old netted twice in the first half to earn the Miners a 2-2 draw at Bibiani Park on Sunday, which saw them finish seventh in the standings, 20 points behind the title-winning Porcupine Warriors.

It is the first time a player has notched 22 goals since Addo set the record during his final season for Hearts of Oak in 2001. He also finished top scorer in the previous two campaigns with 19 and 21 goals respectively.

Annor expressed his delight at matching the feat which stood for 21 years and claimed it wasn’t easy to achieve in Ghana’s top flight.

Speaking to Original FM, Annor said: “[I] Am very delighted to win the Ghana Premier League goal king and equalling my senior, Ishmael Addo’s record.

“It was a very difficult league but I fight very hard to win the GPL goal king.”
