Nigeria announce squad for Women's AFCON

Nigeria women’s national football team head coach Randy Waldrum has announced his final 25-woman squad for the 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) finals.


The American tactician has included Asisat Oshoala, Osinachi Ohale and Chiamaka Nnadozie in the squad that will take part in the tournament which is set to take place in Morocco between 2 and 23 July.


Waldrum opted for a mix of the old guard and new blood, with veterans Tochukwu Oluehi, Ebi, Rita Chikwelu, Francisca Ordega and Ngozi Okobi-Okeoghene on board.


While goalkeeper Rita Akarekor, defenders Chidinma Okeke, Ngozi Emenayo and Opeyemi Sunday, midfielders Suliat Abideen, Amanda Uju Mbadi and Charity Adule, and forward Anam Imo were dropped from the squad.


The Super Falcons will face South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in their first match of the tournament on July 4 before other games against Botswana (7th July) and Burundi (10th July).


All four semi-finalists at the championship in Morocco will qualify to represent Africa at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
