Tuesday 5 July’s action in the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations (WAFCON) saw host nation Morocco as well as Senegal power into the quarterfinals of the competition after racking up their second straight Group A wins.
The Teranga Lionesses secured their spot in the last eight with an early-evening 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso in Rabat, courtesy of a late penalty from Korka Fall.
They were joined on six points by the Atlas Lionesses, who put in a powerful performance to defeat Uganda 3-1 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium. Rosella Ayane put the hosts ahead, before they were pegged back by Sumaya Komuntale.
However, the North Africans scored twice in the second half through Nesryne El Chad and Ghizlane Chebbak to claim top spot on goals scored ahead of Senegal.
Wednesday 6 July brings Matchday 2 action from Group B at Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca. The early-evening game (19:00 CAT) sees Zambia with the challenge of facing a Tunisian team which racked up a 4-1 win over Togo on Sunday, while the late kick-off (22:00 CAT) is between Togo and Cameroon.
Zambia and the Indomitable Lionesses played out a 0-0 stalemate in their opener, and Shepolopolo coach Bruce Mwape is hoping his team can learn to live with the absence of star player and captain Barbara Banda.
“She has been sidelined but don’t forget this is a sporting team of 22 players so the players that we have should be able to deliver. Yes, Barbara has done a lot for this team but we still have replacements and we are confident they can do the job,” he is quoted by the Lusaka Times.
