Morocco and Zambia advanced to the semi-finals of the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday night, as Botswana and Senegal bow out respectively.

The first quarter-final clash saw Zambia take on Senegal at the State Mohamed V in a game that produced a number of highs and lows.

Senegal took the lead in the 61st minute, as Nguenar Ndiaye’s looping header found the back of the net following a set-piece situation on the edge of the Senegalese area.

Zambia equalised 11 minutes later as they capitalised on a crucial error made by the Senegal goalkeeper, Tening Sene, who failed to handle a ball that was lobbed into the danger area.

While the game went into extra-time, neither teams were able to make the most of the extra 30 minutes afforded to them. Zambia walked away as the eventual winners on the night, following a 4-2 win on penalties.

Elsewhere, Morocco faced Botswana at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in their quarter-final tie. Morocco got off to a bright start as Sanaa Mssoudy put the hosts ahead in the 3rd minute of the game, as she followed through on a teasing cross into the area with a well-timed volley.

Botswana replied just four minutes later, with one of the strikes of the tournament so far. Keitumetse Dithebe assumed set-piece duty on the edge of the Morocco penalty box, as she managed to find the back with an accurate free-kick effort.

As the hour mark approached, Morocco saw more the ball and continued to press on in search of a lead. The home side then scored in the 59th minute, thanks to a header from Yasmin Mrabet, as the scoreline remained the same until the referee blew time on the tie.

Wednesday, July 14
