Former Mamelodi Sundowns star Katlego Mphela has said that the club should look to offload Uruguayan midfielder Gaston Sirino in solving their foreign player quota problem.
According to the South African National Soccer League handbook, teams may not have more than five foreign players contracted to the club at any point in time.
At the moment, Sundowns have seven foreign players on their books, which includes Adbelmounaim Boutouil (Morocco), Peter Shalulile (Namibia), Pavol Safranko (Slovakia), Divine Lunga (Zimbabwe) Erwin Saveedra (Bolivia), Abubeker Nasir (Ethiopia) and Sirino (Uruguay).
Now though, Mphela mentioned that Sirino should be the player to make way given that he had already expressed his desire to leave the club in the past.
‘Killer’, as he is affectionately known South African football circles also mentioned that it makes sense to let the diminutive attacker go, especially after the club had signed Sipho Mbule from SuperSport United.
“Surely the club have a plan as to how they will solve this problem of having many foreign players,” Mphela told the Sowetan.
“Saavedra had a difficult season and Safranko hasn’t really showed what he’s got but you would want to give them another chance.
“So personally I would let Sirino go. He wanted to leave in the past few months.
“I don’t know his mental state but I think he’d also jump at the opportunity to go. You can then loan out others because I believe the new foreign players are signed for the Champions League. There’s Mbule now who can play like Sirino, so it makes sense to let Sirino go to clear up the space for the coming guys.”
