Zambia claimed bronze at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations following their 1-0 win over Nigeria at the Stade Mohammed V on Friday night, July 23.
After a bright start to the game, Zambia carved out a couple of chances as they took the game to the Super Falcons. Midway through the first half, it was Nigeria’s turn to attack as they managed to have a go at the Zambia defence.
Against the run of play, Zambia took the lead in the 28th minute, which was recorded as a Chiamaka Nnadozie own goal.
Zambia midfielder Evarine Katongo collected the ball on the edge of the area and pulled off a shot that hit the Nigerian upright, which then hit the goalkeeper and ricocheted into the back of the net.
In the 46th minute, Nigeria were afforded one of their best chances of the game, following a great passing move en-route toward the Zambian goal, however Gift Monday failed to provide an end product as her shot went wide of the mark.
The Super Falcons nearly equalised 10 minutes later as Francisca Ordega found Monday with a well-weighted pass into the area, however, the striker failed to hit the target yet again.
As the game headed into its closing stages, Zambia produced numerous chances to put the game beyond doubt but in the end, held on to claim a 1-0 win.
