With Kaizer Chiefs handing Itumeleng Khune the captain’s armband ahead of the new PSL season, ex-Amakhosi great William Shongwe said that the veteran will contribute greatly towards the team.
Khune, 35, was revealed as the club’s captain at the DStv Premiership launch in Randburg ahead of the 2022/23 season with coach Arthur Zwane looking to depend on his wealth of experience.
Speaking on the decision, Shongwe mentioned that Khune is still a bog player in South African football and while he may not have been a regular, his leadership qualities will benefit the Glamour Boys.
“Khune is still a big player regardless,” Shongwe told Soccer Laduma.
“He might not be able to play regularly but maybe Chiefs have decided to give it a go with him to see what he can do.
“But besides his playing ability, he has leadership qualities, so if you want things to happen on the field of play and as a coach, you want to put yourself in a good position.
“You want somebody close to the players, and Khune is the best bet.”
