Guinea sports minister Lansana Bea Diallo says his country will be capable of hosting the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The West African country is scheduled to host the AFCON for the first time ever in June-July 2025, though Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick recently suggested that Guinea would be stripped of the rights to the tournament, with Nigeria and Benin possibly taking over as co-hosts.
The minister called a press earlier this week and refuted Pinnick’s claims while also assuring the readiness of Guinea to stage the competition.
“Today, there is a CAN which is dedicated to a single country in 2025 and it was said that it is Guinea,” Diallo is quoted by BSN Sports.
“But I observed that many countries are positioning themselves to take it because they said that Guinea is not capable of organising it.
“I would like to tell them this AFCON is for Guinea, I would like to say to all these candidates that their candidacies can wait till 2027, 2029 or 2031 but 2025 is for Guinea.
“The process is underway and is not late, we are well within the deadline,” he concluded.
