Kaizer Chiefs dropped points on matchday one of the 2022-23 DStv Premiership season as Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates recorded wins.

Royal AM maintained their unbeaten record against Chiefs in the top flight as they claimed a 1-0 win over the Soweto giants at the Chatsworth Stadium on Saturday.

The only goal of the match was netted by Brazilian central defender Ricardo Nascimento just a minute into the entertaining match which saw Chiefs create several chances without converting them.

Pirates claimed the Soweto Derby bragging rights when they edged out Swallows FC 1-0 courtesy of debutant Bienvenu Eva Nga’s first half goal at iconic Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

It was also a winning start for Pirates’ new Spanish coach Jose Riveiro who is in his first coaching job outside Europe having previously worked in Finland.

Defending champions Sundowns started their defence of the league title with a 2-0 win over Cape Town City at the DHL Stadium in the Mother City on Friday.

Goals from Aubrey Modiba and Themba Zwane earned Masandawana the win over the Citizens in what was the first game of the season. Zwane has now netted in the opening league game in four consecutive seasons.

The game between Marumo Gallants and Stellenbosch FC ended in a 0-0 draw in Polokwane. Tshegofatso Mabasa cancelled out Bongani Sam’s opening goal as Sekhukgune United and Maritzburg United drew 1-1 in Pietermaritzburg.

On Sunday, Bradley Grobler scored to help SuperSport United hold Chippa United to a 1-1 after Ronald Pfumbidzai had broken the deadlock in Pretoria where Ricardo Goss was sent off in stoppage time.

Lastly, the match between AmaZulu FC and TS Galaxy failed to produce goals as the two teams drew 0-0 in Johannesburg.
