Kaizer Chiefs bounced back from their opening round defeat in the 2022-23 DStv Premiership by claiming a 3-0 home win over Maritzburg United in one of three matches played in South Africa’s top flight on Tuesday 9 August.

Chiefs, beaten by Royal AM this past weekend, were under pressure to claim a first win of the season at FNB Stadium and got off to a flying start when new signing Ashley Du Preez opened the scoring in the fourth minute after kick-off.

Keagan Dolly added a second midway through the first half and a maiden senior goal from 18-year-old Mduduzi Shabalala at the death ensured the Amakhosi picked up their first three points of the campaign and moved to third place on the standings – temporarily at least.

In the early evening match, Swallows FC bounced back from a weekend defeat to edge Cape Town City 3-2 at Dobsonville Stadium, with Siboniso Mtshali scoring an injury-time penalty to secure victory for the Birds.

The Soweto side were two goals up inside the opening 23 minutes thanks to Waseem Isaacs and Tshidiso Patjie, but City fought back to 2-2 via Darwin Gonzalez and Khanyiso Mayo, only for substitute Marc van Heerden to concede a late spot kick and see his team slip to a second straight loss at the start of the league campaign.

The day’s action opened with a 0-0 draw between Richards Bay and Marumo Gallants at the King Zwelithini Stadium. The Natal Rich Boyz, who are newly promoted from the second division, moved to the top of the log on four points with the result, building on their opening round win away to Golden Arrows this past weekend.

The DStv Premiership will complete a midweek round of matches with five further fixtures on Wednesday 10 August, headlined by Mamelodi Sundowns hosting TS Galaxy and Orlando Pirates visiting Stellenbosch FC.
