After a demoralising 3-0 defeat against Leeds United in the Premier League this past weekend, Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel highlighted Edouard Mendy’s mishap in the penalty area as a costly mistake.
Leeds United hosted London giants on Sunday, with fans at Elland Road treated to an eventful encounter. Jesse Marsch’s side showcased their desire to overcome the 2020 UEFA Champions League winners early on.
Playing with a high level of intensity, Leeds took the lead just after the half-hour mark. On receiving a back pass, Mendy tried to dribble past Brendan Aaronson, instead of clearing the ball.
As a result, the attacker stole the ball from the Senegalese goalkeeper and put the ball into the back of the net. A shaken Chelsea struggled to recover from the error and looked shell shocked for large parts of the encounter.
Speaking on the mistake, Tuchel mentioned that he is unsure of what to tell Mendy regarding the mistake and that it set the tone for the rest of the tie.
“He knows himself,” Tuchel said as per the Guardian.
“With these kind of mistakes I don’t know if it’s necessary to speak a lot. He knows it is a mistake.
“Everybody in the world sees that mistake and it is a huge mistake in a crucial time of the match.
“It does not help. He is the one who is most disappointed. It cost us a lot.”
