Al Ahly winger Percy Tau has seen a transfer deadline-day move to French side Le Havre fall through after an agreement could not be reached between the respective parties.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns star had been linked with an exit from the Al Salam Stadium after struggling to establish himself in the first team during the second half of the recently-concluded season.

Injuries limited Tau to just 20 appearances in the Egyptian Premier League and he failed to make Ricardo Soares’ squad for their final five games, with his last outing coming in the 2-0 win over Al Masry on August 10.

The Red Eagles received an offer from Le Havre to take the 28-year-old on a season-long loan, which would have seen him reunite with Luka Elsner, who was his coach at Union SG during a loan spell in 2018/19 while on the books of Brighton.

“We have spoken with Tau and there is an official offer that we made to Al-Ahly Club,” Elsner told Btolat. “But the deal is not easy at all, due to his lack of time before the end of the summer transfer market [closes] and negotiations with Al Ahly [are ongoing].

“We worked together for a season in Belgium, Percy is a very great player, I loved working with him and I want it to be repeated with Le Havre.”

However, the transfer failed to materialise after time ran out and Tau is set to remain in Cairo, having only joined Al Ahly in August 2021 on a four-year contract from the Seagulls.
