A midweek round of three matches in South Africa’s DStv Premiership has seen champions Mamelodi Sundowns return to the top of the log – though they needed a performance of patience and persistence to do so.

The Brazilians defeated Chippa United 1-0 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Wednesday’s lone fixture thanks to an injury time winner from Peter Shalulile, with the result taking them top of the standings on goal difference ahead of Richard s Bay.

The Eastern Cape hosts remain bottom of the log and will feel sickened at coming away with nothing for a disciplined and determined – albeit unambitious – showing.

Tuesday’s matches saw Royal AM miss out on the chance to consolidate top spot when they were beaten 1-0 at home by promoted Richards Bay, while Cape Town City and Sekhukhune United played to a goalless stalemate.

The DStv Premiership will continue with a weekend slate of six matches spread from Saturday 9 to Sunday 11 September and featuring Sundowns at home to Golden Arrows on Saturday night.
