Former England coach Fabio Capello has said that Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly is struggling to adapt to the pace of the Premier League and that he is conditioned to the speed of Italian football.

The Senegalese star spent the majority of his career in Italy where he made 317 appearances for Napoli between 2014 and 2022. Throughout his time in Naples, Koulibaly was often linked with big moves away from the club as he grew into becoming one of Europe’s most sought after defenders.

The robust defender recently made the switch to England as Chelsea secured his services for a fee of £33 million. Now though, the former England national team coach spoke of Koulibaly’s recent struggles at the club and highlighted the pace of the Premier League as the major issue for the centre-back.

“I would like to talk about the difficulties of Koulibaly at Chelsea,’ Capello told Sky Calico Club.

“In Naples, he was doing everything by himself. His problems now depend on the speed with which they play in England.

“It’s the same pace used by Udinese to give Roma fits. It’s something that must make us Italians reflect.”
