Names such as Roger Milla and Samuel Eto’o are synonymous with Cameroonian football, as the legends paved the way for many African stars to make their mark in some of the biggest competitions in the world. In light of that, here are the key players for Cameroon at the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Now at the age of 26, Onana has come a long way since his days as a promising young goalkeeper during his time with Ajax Amsterdam.
Onana’s career hit a snag last year, when he was banned for nine months following a positive doping test. Now though, Onana joined Inter Milan ahead of the 2022/23 campaign as a free agent. As a massive step in his career, Onana now has the opportunity to get back to the playing level he was previously accustomed to. As an added bonus, Onana has the opportunity to do so at the World Cup.
As one of the few Cameroonian stars plying their trade in the Premier League, Mbeumo has been making a lasting impression with his displays at Brentford.
In Brentford’s astonishing 4-0 win over Manchester United earlier this season, Mbeumo was one of his side’s star performers, proving to be a difficult attacker for Premier League defenders to deal with as a hard running left-footer. The 23-year-old was a starter for Cameroon in their recent international friendlies against Uzbekistan and South Korea, so supporters can expect Mbuemo to have a major part in the Indomitable Lions World Cup squad.
As Cameroon captain, Aboubakar will be relied upon as his nation’s talisman. Now at the age of 30, the attacker has racked up 88 appearances for his nation, scoring 33 goals along the way.
Other than International friendlies, Aboubakar has been a prolific scorer in important tournaments and qualification campaigns for Cameroon. With the World Cup on the horizon, the powerful centre-forward will be Cameroon’s main outlet for goals.
