Many African stars found joy in plying their trade in Spanish football and in highlighting the players who were most prolific in front of goal, here are the top three goalscorers in the Spanish LaLiga hailing from the African continent.
Christopher Ohen – 42
When it comes to Nigerian footballing greats, the likes of Jay-Jay Okocha, John Obi-Mikel and Nwankwo Kanu are often mentioned without fail.
Perhaps less celebrated than most Super Eagles legends, Ohen was deemed to be an underrated player during the 1990s where he made over 100 appearances in LaLiga. According to Transkermarkt, Ohen made one appearance for the Real Madrid Castilla outfit as well.
Nonetheless, Ohen spent most of his career with Compostela where he scored 42 LaLiga goals over a span of four seasons.
Freddie Kanoute – 89
As a slightly more popular player, Kanoute saw himself playing in lands such as England, Spain, France and China.
However, Kanoute was best known during his time with Sevilla, where he became a fan favourite among the club’s passionate support base. The Malian possessed an elegant touch, while he knew his way around the penalty area. The 2007 African Footballer of the Year made 209 league appearances for Sevilla, scoring a total of 89 goals along the way.
Samuel Eto’o – 162
To many, Eto’o is regarded to be one of the greatest African footballers of all time. The Cameroon star boasts one of the most impressive player CV’s around, as he racked up the accolades during his time with clubs such as Barcelona and Inter Milan.
One of the most ironic factors around Eto’o’s career is that he was deemed to be a Real Madrid reject during his younger years, while going on to shine for arch-rivals Barcelona later on in his glittering career. In 280 LaLiga appearances, the striker went on to net an astonishing 162 goals.
