Some of Africa’s finest footballing talents have made their way to the Italian Serie A and in the process, found huge success in the highly tactical league. Here are the top three African goal scorers in Serie A football.
Khouma Babacar – 39
Standing at 1.9m meters tall, Babacar is an easily spotted player each time he takes to the field. Now at the age of 29, the Senegalese striker currently plies his trade with FC Copenhagen in the Danish league.
However, Babacar’s most memorable run of his career came during his time with Fiorentina in Serie A. The attacker also had brief stints with Lecce and Sassuolo as he found joy playing in Italy. In 166 appearances, Babacar scored 39 Serie A goals which makes him the third highest scoring African in the league.
Gervinho – 40
Known for sporting a bold look that consists of dreadlocks and a headband, the Ivorian was an enterprising player on his day. The winger featured in lands such as England, Turkey and France however, the bulk of his career goals was recorded during his time in Italy.
Gervinho is currently the second highest scoring African player in Serie A football history, as he managed to net 40 goals in 159 appearances in the popular league.
George Weah – 46
To many, Weah is regarded as the greatest African footballer of all time and is currently the only player from the continent to win the coveted Ballon d’Or award.
These days, Weah’s duties are in office as the President of his home nation, Liberia. In his footballing prime, Weah was a class act and has legendary status at clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain, AS Monaco and AC Milan.
With the Italian giants, Weah managed to win two Serie A titles with his exploits earning him a place in the club’s star laden Hall of Fame.
Weah scored 46 goals in 114 league appearances for Milan, making him the all-time leading goalscorer in Serie A among African footballers.
