Mamelodi Sundowns legend Bennett Mnguni has backed the club’s decision of making Rulani Mokwena the sole head coach at Chloorkop and described the mentor as being one of the best coaches in the country.

In what was news that sent shockwaves throughout the South African football fraternity this week, the Brazilians announced Mokwena as the sole head coach, while Steve Komphela was promoted to become the assistant coach.

As for Manqoba Mngqithi, the former co-coach was demoted to the senior coach’s role which was previously occupied by Komphela.

Speaking on the news, Mnguni mentioned that Rulani has enough experience to lead the team and that the young mentor will now be responsible for results going forward.

“I think Rulani has learned a lot from those two experienced coaches and he knows the individual players’ strongest points and their weaknesses,” Mnguni told the Sowetan.

“I don’t think that’s going to be a problem for him to be head coach. Actually, we need some young blood to coach the big teams. I can say it is a good move as Rulani is one of the best coaches, Manqoba is also a good coach.

“We need to know which one is responsible when we win or lose, we need to have somebody who is responsible for the supporters and former players not to point fingers at everybody. Now we know Rulani is the head coach; it is a good decision.”
