Nigeria international Calvin Bassey’s ball-playing ability has been criticized by former Ajax Amsterdam star Kenneth Perez.
The young defender has been the subject of criticism from Ajax’s former players since he joined the Dutch champions from Scottish giants Rangers FC in July this year.
Having had two spells as an Ajax player, Perez feels Bassey is ‘not good enough’ to turn out for the Amsterdam-based football heavyweights.
“It’s very mediocre on the ball, Bambi on ice. It’s almost pathetic,” Perez, who is a former Denmark international, told ESPN as quoted by Ajax Showtime.
“Of course, they let him [Bassey] go completely free, so he has to come up with an idea.”
Bassey – a left-footed defender – has played 18 competitive matches for Ajax this season and he has helped the team keep five clean sheets, while scoring once in the process.
The 22-year-old had a successful two-year spell at Rangers – winning the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup, before finishing second in last season’s UEFA Europa League.
Rangers then announced that Bassey had been sold to Ajax for a club record fee of around £20 million.
