Nigeria head coach Jose Peseiro has come out in defence of Emmanuel Dennis after he missed a penalty in the 4-0 defeat to Portugal on Thursday.

The Super Eagles, who failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, took on the Selecao in Lisbon to aid their preparations for the global showpiece in Qatar.

The former European champions ran out comfortable victors on home soil, with Bruno Fernandes (9′, 35′ PEN) scoring a first-half brace, while Goncalo Ramos (82′) and Joao Mario (84′) also got their names on the scoresheet late on.

Peseiro’s side were presented with a chance to halve the deficit moments before Ramos’ goal when the referee pointed to the spot for the second time in the match after Bright Osayi-Samuel had been brought down by Diogo Dalot inside the area.

However, Dennis saw his spot-kick saved by Rui Patricio, having insisted on taking the penalty following his success from 12 yards out on his last appearance for the West Africans – a record 10-0 mauling of Sao Tome and Príncipe five months ago.

Peseiro has offered his support of the Nottingham Forest striker though, stating that he won’t have players in his squad criticising others for mishaps.

“About that I speak with my players. In my team I won’t allow someone kill one player,” the Portuguese tactician told NFF TV after the friendly encounter.

“He missed a penalty, the next time we can train him more to score the penalty. We need to defend our players.

“Which players in the world don’t miss penalties? Every player can miss a penalty. It was Dennis today, he has my protection.”
