Former Egyptian international and current Future FC sporting director Abdel-Zaher El-Sakka has backed Cairo giants Al Ahly and Zamalek to dominate their CAF Champions League groups when the competition resumes in February.
Al Ahly, 10-time winners of the competition, will face Mamelodi Sundowns, Al Hilal and Coton Sport in Group B.
Zamalek, five-time African champions, will battle Esperance de Tunis, CR Belouizdad and Al Merrikh in Group D.
“The name of the Cairo giants is frightening to any competitor in Africa,” El-Sakka told Youm7, as quoted by KingFut.
“I don’t know why we are producing such an image that there is a difficult group and an easy one.
“It seems that Mamelodi Sundowns are destined to face Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League. But I don’t think it will be difficult for the Red Devils who beat the South African side on multiple occasions before.
“On the other hand, Zamalek need to be cautious with their games. The White Knights are always capable of beating the strong teams of their group, however, they lose easy points against the smaller teams which makes it difficult for them at the end.”
The group stage of the CAFCL will get underway on the weekend of 10-12 February 2023.
