Bayern Munich right-back Noussair Mazraoui will be sidelined for up to six weeks with an inflamed heart sac caused by a COVID-19 infection.
The Morocco international contracted the Coronavirus during the 2022 World Cup and missed the third-place playoff against Croatia.
Mazraoui underwent further tests on his return to the Allianz Arena in December and was diagnosed with “a mild inflammation of the pericardium.”
The 25-year-old defender, who helped the Atlas Lions make history by becoming the first African team to reach the World Cup semi-finals, stayed behind in Munich as Julian Nagelsmann’s squad flew to Doha for a training camp to prepare for the second half of the Bundesliga season.
Mazraoui featured 11 times for Bayern in the league before the lengthy recess but is expected to miss at least six games when the campaign gets underway on January 20.
