Al Ahly have ended their interest in Abdul-Aziz Yakubu after the Rio Ave striker failed a medical in Cairo this week.

The Red Eagles made a move for the Ghanaian in a bid to improve their numbers in attack, with Mohamed Sherif, Shady Hussein and Hossam Hassam scoring just three goals between them from a combined 28 appearances.

A fee had been agreed with the Portuguese club and Yakubu even put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half-year deal in the Egyptian capital.

But Amir Tawfik, who oversees Al Ahly’s signings, confirmed on Saturday that the proposed transfer fell through due to the 24-year-old failing “the medical examination he underwent three days ago”.

Yakubu has struggled with knee injuries recently and underwent surgery twice in an attempt to rectify the problem, which gave the Egyptian giants cause for concern.

Signing a new striker remains a priority for Marcel Koller’s side after Hassam joined league rivals Smouha on loan earlier this month.
