Mamelodi Sundowns have set a new record for the most number of consecutive wins in the DStv Premiership, racking up a 12th straight triumph when they edged Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 at FNB Stadium in one of four matches played in South Africa’s top flight on Saturday.

The Brazilians, who secured the result in a night kick-off on the back of a fine strike from Neo Maema in the first half, have eclipsed the previous PSL-era (Premier Soccer League) record of 11 straight wins, set by their 2006-07 team under the guidance of PSL legend Gordon Igesund. ‘Downs also opened a massive 17-point lead at the top of the log over the nearest chasers Richards Bay (who have played two games less).

As for the Amakhosi, this is a third straight defeat since the turn of the year, leaving them in fifth spot and a full 22 points adrift of their vanquishers on the night.

The other night game on Saturday was a 1-1 draw between AmaZulu and Marumo Gallants at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. The visitors claimed the lead via Joseph Molangoane, only for Usuthu to hit back via Sede Dion Jr.

Bahlabane ba Ntwa also missed a penalty, as they stayed in last place (16th) on the log and saw their winless run stretched to six matches.

The two afternoon games came from the greater Durban area and were both defined by late goals. At the Princess Magogo Stadium, Maritzburg United secured a third straight win by defeating hosts and KwaZulu-Natal rivals Golden Arrows (who have lost three of their last four) 1-0 – thanks to an injury-time strike by Jose Ali Meza.

At the Chatsworth Stadium, hosts Royal AM appeared on course for victory thanks to Motebang Sera’s early strike, but Chippa United’s Etiosa Ighodaro equalised late in the second half to salvage a 1-1 draw. The result means Thwihli Thwahla have won just once in their last six Premiership matches, while the Chilli Boys are winless in seven straight league fixtures.

The DStv Premiership continues on Sunday 22 January with two matches: Orlando Pirates at home to Stellenbosch FC and Richards Bay visiting SuperSport United.
