Nigerian legend Victor Ikpeba has slammed Chelsea FC over their treatment of former Gabon captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Aubameyang’s future with the English club was recently placed into doubt after the 33-year-old striker suffered the humiliation of being omitted from the Blues’ UEFA 25-man Champions League squad.
Chelsea manager Graham Potter made changes as he included Enzo Fernandez, João Félix and Mykhailo Mudryk in the squad – and needed to make room by omitting one name from their list.
Aubameyang was also not included in the matchday squad as the Blues drew 0-0 with Fulham in a Premier League match at Stamford Bridge over the weekend.
“I have my doubts, I have worries. A team that has Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang I don’t understand why he doesn’t play,” Ikpeba said on All Nigerian Soccer.
“Kai Havertz with due respect to him, is not a striker. He can play from the wings.
“There’s a lot of confusion going around at the club. I think things have been bad. I don’t know how Chelsea will go on a run of wins from the problems that they are on right now,” Ikpeba went on.
Ikpeba also questioned the London giants’ decision to sign Enzo Fernandez from Portuguese giants SL Benfica during the recent transfer window.
“It’s a new environment for them, spending £107m for a World Cup champion (Enzo Fernandez) at that age,” the former AS Monaco striker added.
“What can he change? Is he better than Jorginho or N’Golo Kante that they had before. I don’t think that Graham Potter is the right manager for this Chelsea side.”
