Richards Bay and SuperSport United became the first top-flight casualties in the Nedbank Cup, while Mamelodi Sundowns advanced as defending champions.

Mamelodi Sundowns kicked off their title defence with a 3-2 win over Richards Bay at Loftus Versfeld on Tuesday.

The two teams went into the break at level pegging after Nkanyiso Zungu (30′ PEN) cancelled out Peter Shalulile’s 11th-minute opener for the Brazilians.

Mosa Lebusa (46′) restored Sundowns lead early in the second half and Shalulile (55′) got his name on the scoresheet again before Katleho Makateng (90′) struck at the death for the Natal Rich Boyz to set up a tense final few minutes.

Former champions Marumo Gallants received a welcome cup tonic with a 3-1 victory over Magesi at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

The DStv Premiership’s basement side, who lifted the Nedbank Cup in 2021, raced into a three-goal lead before half-time through Letsie Koapeng (27′ PEN), Judas Moseamedi (45′) and Tebogo Thangwane (45+1′), although Kagiso Selemela (59) managed to pull one back for the Motsepe Foundation Championship team in the second half.

The first major upset of the round came on Wednesday as minnows Dondol Stars battled back from behind to beat SuperSport United 2-1 at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.

Matsatsantsa got off to a promising start when Siyabonga Nhlapo opened the scoring on 18 minutes but Relebogile Molefe (51′) hit back for the ABC Motsepe League outfit early in the second half and Kholofelo Monama (76′) completed the comeback win to eliminate their Thwane rivals at the first hurdle.

Elsewhere, Sekhukhune United produced a goalfest at the Peter Mokaba Stadium as they trashed Liver Brothers 6-0, with the goals coming from Roderick Kabwe (13′), Daniel Cardoso (36′). Chibuike Ohizu 53” PEN), Vusimuzi Mncube (80′, 85′) and Tashreeq Morris (90+2′).
