In what was news that made headlines on the African continent, Mamelodi Sundowns were recently selected to participate in the annual U15 Kevin De Bruyne Cup, which is set to take place in Belgium in June this year.
The Sundowns team will mix it up with clubs such as Manchester City, Barcelona, PSG and Real Madrid in the keenly anticipated youth competition.
Downs are also the first African team to play in the inaugural tournament, with De Bruyne recognising the Chloorkop outfit’s ‘success and values’.
“It’s a proud moment for me to welcome Mamelodi Sundowns as the first African team to participate in the tournament,” De Bruyne said in a statement.
“We are well aware of the success and values Mamelodi Sundowns stands for as a club, and I have no doubt their youth team will be a wonderful addition to the team roster.
“I’m so excited to meet the Sundowns team, and can’t wait to see our South African friends in June. Best of luck!”
That said, Downs took to their social media and described the Kevin De Bruyne Cup as the ‘most prestigious youth tournament in Europe’.
“Mamelodi Sundowns and Roc Nation Sports International are delighted to announce Masandawana’s participation in this year’s edition of the most prestigious youth tournament in Europe- the Kevin De Bruyne Cup in Belgium!”
