Ghanaian Football Association (GFA) has responded to reports suggesting that Christian Atsu’s jersey number seven will soon be retired.

The former Black Stars winger tragically died following the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on 6 February 2023.

There have been reports indicating that the GFA is planning to retire the jersey number that Atsu donned for the national team.

However, this has been dismissed by the GFA’s executive committee member Asamoah Boadu.

“I was misquoted. I think people just want clicks on their websites,” Boadu said on Ghana Soccer Net.

“I never said the FA is considering retiring the No.7 jersey in honour of Atsu. I work under people at the FA, so why will I make a decision for the whole association.”

Atsu was a full international with 65 caps from 2012 to 2019, Atsu represented Ghana at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

He helped the team finish as runners-up at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, in which he also won Player of the Tournament and Goal of the Tournament.
