A busy Saturday in South Africa’s DStv Premiership was headlined by a narrow and somewhat fortuitous 1-0 victory for Kaizer Chiefs over Orlando Pirates in the Soweto derby.

Chiefs, who came into the match under huge pressure due to poor recent results, claimed the victory on the back of Pirates being their own worst enemies: not only did the Buccaneers play the last half hour with a man’s disadvantage following a straight red card for defender Innocent Maela, they also scored a completely avoidable own goal on 89 minutes through substitute Olisa Ndah to provide the deciding moment of the afternoon kick-off.

The two late afternoon matches both produced away wins, with Cape Town City triumphing 1-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium against Sekhukhune United thanks to a thunderbolt from Thabo Nodada, while Stellenbosch FC claimed a third straight win when they defeated Richards Bay (now five winless, with three successive losses) 2-1 at King Zwelithini Stadium via a brace from Iqraam Rayners.

The night game at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium saw rivals AmaZulu and Royal AM play to an entertaining 1-1 draw. Thwihli Thwahla thought they were on course for an away victory thanks to a fine strike early in the second half from Ruzaigh Gamildien, but Usuthu levelled late on through en even better goal from Bonginkois Ntuli to salvage a share of the spoils.

The weekend’s action got underway on Friday with SuperSport United taking a stronger hold of second place with a 2-0 home win over Maritzburg United, courtesy of second-half goals from Kegan Johannes and Bradley Grobler.

The DStv Premiership will close its weekend slate with a lone match on Sunday, as Chippa United welcome Swallows FC to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha.
