Senegal head coach Aliou Cisse has warned his team against complacency after thrashing Mozambique 5-1 in their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Diamniadio Olympic Stadium in Dakar on Friday night.
The Lions of Teranga were in complete control of the Group L encounter after racing into a four-goal lead at the break, with Youssouf Sabaly opening the scoring after just nine minutes before Sadio Mane (15′), Iliman Ndiaye (32′) and Boulaye Dia (39) also got their names on the scoresheet.
Gildo Vilanculos (48′) managed to pull one back for Mambas early in the second half but Habib Diallo completed the rout two minutes from time to maintain the defending champions’ perfect record in the group.
While Cisse was pleased with a fine attacking performance from his players, he acknowledges that the return leg in Maputo on Tuesday will be a whole different ball-game.
“I am delighted because this is a match that we approached very well. We told the players to go at them from the first minute,” he said after the match.
“However, the truth of the matter is tonight is not the same as the match we will play in four days’ time. In Maputo, the task will be difficult because it is not easy to win there.”
Cameroon will secure their passage to the showpiece in Ivory Coast next year should they beat the Southern Africans at the Estadio do Zimpeto.
