Benin head coach Gernot Rohr insists they will keep working towards securing qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after a 1-1 draw with Rwanda in Kigali on Wednesday.
The Cheetahs aren’t mathematically out of contention yet as they trail Mozambique by just two points at the bottom of Group L with two matches left to play.
Rohr’s side took the lead through Jodel Dossou in the 57th minute at the Kigali Pele Stadium but they were unable to hold on for victory as Thierry Manzi drew the Wasps level on 71 minutes to earn a share of the spoils.
Rohr, who also oversaw a 1-1 draw against the same opposition in his first game at the helm seven days earlier, felt his players gave a good account of themselves despite struggling to cope with the high altitude.
The German admits he is still in the rebuilding process but has faith that his team can pick up at least one win from their final two games to put pressure on the Mambas and Rwanda.
“We played in difficult conditions because we are not used to playing at altitude. But we gave in a good fight and played well,” the former Nigeria manager said.
“We are building a team and we have many new players in the squad. We will keep working.”
