Saturday’s DStv Premiership action may not have featured Mamelodi Sundowns (who took on Coton Sport in the CAF Champions League), but the team in yellow and blue were again the headline makers as their inevitable title triumph was confirmed by SuperSport United’s 1-1 draw away to Chippa United.
Matsatsantsa was the only remaining team with a mathematical chance of catching the league leaders, but this result against the Chilli Boys – which featured goals by Ronald Pfumbidzai and Ghampani Lungu – means that the Brazilians have secured a sixth successive championship with seven matches to spare… and without even kicking a ball on the domestic front this weekend.
SuperSport’s result is more realistically a blow in their battle to end as runners-up, as they now find themselves in a three-way tie with Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.
Chiefs brought Stellenbosch FC’s fine run of form to an end with a 2-1 win at the FNB Stadium. The Maroons had taken 13 points from the last 15 available, but they had a bad day in the office against the Amakhosi, who claimed a fourth straight league victory on the back of goals from Ashley Du Preez and Keagen Dolly – as well a red card for Stellenbosch’s Sage Stephens.
The night game at Moses Mabhida Stadium saw a 1-0 win for Swallows FC away to AmaZulu. The Birds claimed a key result in their survival bid – moving six points clear of the relegation playoff zone – thanks to a first-half strike from Kagiso Malinga.
The afternoon match at the King Zwelithini Stadium brought a 2-0 away win for Orlando Pirates over Richards Bay. Terrence Dzvukamanja struck just after the half-hour mark and Monnapule Saleng sealed the points late on, as the Buccaneers racked up a third successive league win, while the Natal Rich Boyz slumped to a sixth straight defeat in the Premiership.
The weekend’s DStv Premiership action wraps up on Sunday with Golden Arrows v Sekhukhune United and TS Galaxy v Maritzburg United.
