Maritzburg United chairman Farook Kadodia is desperate to secure a commercial sponsor for the club amid doubts over funding from Msunduzi Municipality in Pietermaritzburg.
The municipality agreed to sponsor the Team of Choice in 2021 and were obligated to make a payment of R3 million a year for the next 36 months.
However, due to bankruptcy and the collapse of service delivery, the municipality is unlikely to meet its contractual commitment to Fadlu Davids’ side, who are currently at the foot of the DStv Premiership table with five games remaining in the 2022-23 season.
Kadodia has expressed concerns about the team’s continued existence without support from the city and is urging businesses to get involved as he explores other avenues of funding.
“The team cannot survive if we don’t have any support from the municipality,” he said. “I still hope that they will support us. I cannot fight with the municipality because there is no money, if they had money they would help us out.
“You can help us to find a commercial sponsor, don’t worry about the municipality because that will make us (the team and the municipality) fight for nothing. Business people need to support Maritzburg before the team is lost.”
