Heart of Lions head coach Fatawu Salifu has hailed the impact made by Dr Randy Abbey in their promotion to the Ghana Premier League for the 2023-24 season.
The Giant Killers secured their return to the top tier of Ghanaian football for the first time in eight years after opening up an unassailable 19-point lead in Division One Zone 3.
Salifu’s side secured top spot in the table with five matches to spare after closest challengers Vision FC and Semper Fi FC both suffered defeats on matchday 25.
Abbey was responsible for bringing Salifu to the Kpando Stadium in September 2022 and the 33-year-old tactician revealed the crucial role he played in the club’s title-winning campaign.
“Randy Abbey is one of the people I work with at the national team level, that is the Black Satellites. He happens to be the Chairman of the Committee and I happen to be one of the assistants,” Salifu told Citi Sports.
“Randy developed an interest in me to come and handle Hearts of Lions, and as a young person, I am lucky to be working with someone like him.
“Tactically he is not a coach, but I will say that one time, he suggested ideas to me that worked perfectly. He actually guided us a lot in the season.
“He showed us that he is well experienced when it comes to Ghana football, so I think that he played a very big role in making sure we qualify, and the financial support as well.”
The Kpando outfit were relegated from the top flight in the 2014-15 season after finishing 14th out of the 16 teams, having just missed out on survival by virtue of an inferior goal difference to Hearts of Oak.
