The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying tournament resumed with three Matchday 5 clashes on Wednesday 14 June, headlined by Egypt securing a ticket to the finals in Ivory Coast next year with a win over Guinea in Marrakesh.

The Syli National’s Serhou Guirassy put the ‘hosts’ (playing on neutral ground due to a lack of CAF-approved venues in their home country) into the lead, but the Pharaohs struck back via ‘Trezeguet’ to leave the game at 1-1 at half time.

Mostafa Mohamed then crashed home a winner with just over 10 minutes of regulation to play to guarantee top spot in the group and a ticket to the Nations Cup tournament in Ivory Coast, which will be played from January 13 to February 11 next year.

An early-evening clash from Group A brought Guinea-Bissau to the verge of qualification, as they defeated ‘hosts’ Sao Tome & Principe 1-0 in Bissau thanks to a second-half strike from Zinho Gano.

The Djurtus moved to the top of the log on 10 points and will secure a ticket to a fourth successive AFCON finals if Nigeria (nine points) can avoid defeat away to Sierra Leone (five points) in Monrovia on Sunday 18 June.

The afternoon match from Group G saw Gambia claim a key 3-2 away win over South Sudan in Ismaila, thereby joining Mali (who have a crunch clash away to Congo in Brazzaville on Sunday 18 June) at the top of the log on nine points.

The Scorpions claimed the victory thanks to a winner deep in injury time from Hamza Barry. An earlier injury-time equaliser from South Sudan’s Peter Chol seemed to have ensured a 2-2 draw for the hosts, who twice found themselves behind in the match, but they ultimately succumbed to the West Africans and have been eliminated from the competition.

The list of teams already qualified for next year’s AFCON is: Ivory Coast (hosts), Morocco, Algeria, South Africa, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Tunisia and Egypt.

The AFCON qualifiers will continue on Saturday 17 June, with the key matches pitting Zambia and Equatorial Guinea against Ivory Coast and Tunisia respectively.
