Egypt head coach Rui Vitoria has made their intentions known after the Pharaohs qualified for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals.
The seven-time African champions claimed a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Guinea in Morocco on Wednesday night and the win saw Egypt qualify as Group D winners with a match to spare.
Serhou Guirassy opened the scoring to hand the National Elephants who were the home side the lead, but goals from Mahmoud Trezeguet and Mohamed Salah earned the Pharaohs the win.
“Egypt are where they should always be,” Vitoria wrote on his official Instagram account after the match.
“We achieved the first goal of this journey, with all the dedication, pride and quality on the part of my players.
“Congratulations. Work rewards. There’s so much more to conquer, we don’t want to stop there. Honored to be the national team coach of this great country.”
The Portuguese tactician will now be hoping to guide Egypt to their first AFCON title since 2010 and a record-extending eighth title.
Ivory Coast will host the 2023 AFCON finals between 13 January and 11 February 2024.
