Nigeria headlined the latest round of 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and eventually qualified for the showpiece courtesy of an eventful 3-2 victory over Sierra Leone at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex on Sunday.
With Victor Osimhen netting a brace, Nigeria held a 2-0 lead over Sierra Leone until the 41st minute, when Mustapha Bundu pulled one back for the hosts. Augustus Kargbo provided Sierra Leone with a bit of hope in the 84th minute, courtesy of a brilliant individual effort on the edge of the Super Eagles box.
However, second-half substitute Kelechi Iheanacho’s goal in the 95th minute ensured Nigeria’s spot in the upcoming tournament that will be held in Ivory Coast.
Elsewhere, Mozambique completed a smash-and-grab style 2-0 victory over Rwanda at the Huye Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Despite having considerably less ball possession than Rwanda, Geny Catamo opened the scoring soon before the break, while an injury time effort by Clesio Bauque saw Mozambique keep their AFCON qualification dream alive. However, it was heartbreak for Rwanda, who will now miss out on qualifying for the tournament.
