The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has yet to make a decision on the future of Jose Peseiro as head coach of the national team amid speculation that his contract was renewed.

Peseiro took over the reins from Austin Eguavoen in May 2022 and has guided the Super Eagles to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after picking up four wins out of five in the qualifiers.

The Portuguese tactician kicked off his tenure with back-to-back friendly defeats against Mexico and Ecuador, but quickly won over Nigerian fans with a record 10-0 victory over Sao Tome and Príncipe in Group A of qualifying one month later.

With his current deal set to expire this week, local reports indicated that the NFF had agreed new terms with Peseiro through to the end of AFCON 2023.

However, NFF Media Director Ademola Olajire quashed the rumours, stating that governing body will make an announcement in due course regarding the 63-year-old’s fate.

“I am not aware that Peseiro’s contract has been renewed. Such information will be released by the NFF when it happens,” Olajire told the Guardian.

Peseiro’s side secured a dramatic 3-2 win over Sierra Leone earlier this month to clinch qualification for the continental showpiece in Ivory Coast and they lead Guinea-Bissau by one point ahead of their final group game against the Falcons and True Parrots in September.
