Swallows have pulled off a coup with the appointment of c as their new head coach, which sees him leave Mamelodi Sundowns after three successful seasons.

Komphela joined the Brazilians’ coaching staff in 2020 and was part of the technical team that won three consecutive DStv Premiership titles alongside Rulani Mokwena and Manqoba Mngqithi.

A backroom reshuffle in October last year saw the 55-year-old redeployed as first-team coach, with Mokwena being promoted from his role as co-coach to take charge of Sundowns on his own.

Meanwhile, the Dube Birds handed the reins to Musa Nyatama on an interim basis in March following the surprise departure of Ernst Middendorp and he eventually steered the club to safety.

However, the Soweto outfit have decided to bring in Komphela, who will be assisted by Nyatama and Ditheko Mototo as they look to take Swallows to a new level.

“Swallows FC is thrilled to announce the appointment of coach Steve Komphela as the head coach of the club. He will be assisted by Musa Nyatama together with Ditheko Mototo,” the Bids announced in a statement on Sunday.

“We want to take Swallows FC to the next level and we are excited to have attracted the services of coach Komphela. We appreciate the professional manner in which Mamelodi Sundowns managed these negotiations.

“Coach Musa Nyatama remains a special pillar of our team and his willingness to learn and work closer with an experienced coach like Steve Komphela is highly appreciated.

“The two coaches met last night to celebrate coach Komphela’s birthday and they were both excited to work together and take Swallows FC to higher levels. The coach will be formally introduced to the Swallows FC family on Tuesday.”
