Saturday’s DStv Premiership action was headlined by an upset 1-0 win for Stellenbosch FC over heavyweights Orlando Pirates at the Danie Craven Stadium, in one of four matches played across the country.
Stellies, thanks to a well-taken goal late in the first half from Antonio Van Wyk and a resilient defensive showing, proved too strong for the Buccaneers and deservedly claimed all three points on offer.
In the afternoon matches, Golden Arrows and Moroka Swallows settled for a 1-1 draw at the Mpumalanga Stadium after goals from Siyanda Mthanti and Tshegofatso Mabasa, while SuperSport United got their campaign off to a winning start by downing Richards Bay 2-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, courtesy of second-half strikes from new signings Terrence Dzvukamanja and Etiosa Ighodaro.
The early evening clash at the Harry Gwala Stadium saw KwaZulu-Natal rivals Royal AM and AmaZulu play out a goalless stalemate.
Saturday’s action followed on from Mamelodi Sundowns opening the defence of their title with a hard-fought 2-1 away win over Sekhukhune United on Friday night, thanks to goals from Peter Shalulile and Lucas Costa.
The first round of the new DStv Premiership season continues on Sunday 6 August with Kaizer Chiefs v Chippa United, TS Galaxy v Cape Town Spurs and Cape Town City v Polokwane City.
