The second round of the new DStv Premiership season wrapped up on Wednesday evening and the league features a two-way tie at the top of the log, with Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City the duo enjoying a 100 percent record.

The Brazilians trumped Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday afternoon thanks to a late winner from Neo Maema. The Amakhosi showed plenty of their own promise and looked set to claim an away point against the champions when Ashley Du Preez had cancelled out Lucas Costa’s opener.

‘Downs are in a two-way tie at the top of the league, joined on six points by Cape Town City, who edged Moroka Swallows 1-0 in Soweto thanks to Taahir Goedeman’s strike.

SuperSport United were looking to join the leaders on six points, and were given a great opportunity to do so when opponents AmaZulu were reduced to 10 men before half time thanks to a straight red card for Thembela Sikhakhane, but their clash at Moses Mabhida Stadium ended in a goalless stalemate.

Wednesday also saw Polokwane City claim their first DStv Premiership win since March of 2020, as they edged Stellenbosch 1-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium thanks to an own goal from Olivier Toure; fellow promoted side Cape Town Spurs slumped to a second straight loss and are bottom of the log after a 2-0 defeat at home to Sekhukhune United (who scored via Edwin Gyimah and Chibuike Ohizu); and Chippa United v TS Galaxy ended in a 0-0 draw.

Tuesday was headlined by a 4-2 home win for Orlando Pirates over Royal AM – with goals from Zakhele Lepasa (two), Monnapule Saleng and Bandile Shandu for the Buccaneers – while Golden Arrows got the better of Richards Bay 2-1 at the King Zwelithini Stadium thanks to a late winner from Olwethu Ncube.

The DStv Premiership will go on pause while the MTN8 quarterfinal fixtures are played this weekend, before resuming with a full round of fixtures on the weekend of 18-20 August.
