Mamelodi Sundowns’ perfect start to the 2023-24 DStv Premiership continued when they defeated Chippa United 2-0 in one of three matches played across the country on Saturday, making it four wins from as many outings this season.

The 2023-24 league campaign is only just over two weeks old, but already the Brazilians (who have won the last six league titles in succession) hold a five-point lead at the top of the log, albeit having played a game more than nearest chasers SuperSport United.

Sundowns’ victory in a night game at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha was secured by a strike from Aubrey Modiba and an own goal from Justice Chabalala – both in the first half.

The day opened with an afternoon clash at the Peter Mokaba Stadium which saw hosts Polokwane City triumph 3-1 over fellow promoted club Cape Town Spurs. Oswin Appollis was the driving force for Rise and Shine, scoring two goals as they claimed a second win, while The Urban Warriors remain rock bottom after three defeats from as many outings.

The early evening clash in Durban saw a goalless stalemate between KwaZulu-Natal rivals AmaZulu and Richards Bay. Usuthu have registered three successive 0-0 stalemates this season, while the Natal Rich Boyz have now gone 17 league games without a win – a dry streak which stretches back to January.

Saturday’s results added to a Friday which brought a 1-0 win for SuperSport United at home to Cape Town City and a 3-1 away triumph for Stellenbosch FC over Royal AM.

The DStv Premiership wraps up for the weekend with one match on Sunday 20 August, as TS Galaxy host Kaizer Chiefs at Mbombela Stadium.
